With barely a minute to spare, we made it onto the 9:35am boat as it pulled away from the pier.
There's something about the salty sea air that just makes me feel alive! We sat on the open deck as we enjoyed the wind in our hair and warm sun on our faces.
The boat ride was smooth sailing - oh look there's a sail boat!
We shared the open deck with four other couples and a handful of singles giving us the luxury of plenty of space to stretch our legs. I cuddled up next to Shaun as we recapped our travel experiences so far.
About 30 minutes later we spotted Naples in the distance with a foggy haze filling the air above the city.
After disembarking, I heaved a sigh of relief when we got to the train station and away from the crazy congested vehicular nightmare that is Naples. As I mentioned in my Sorrento blog post, the drivers are possibly the craziest and most daring I've seen in Italy.
After a 30 minute wait for our Trenitalia train to arrive we boarded our carriage and met a lovely couple seated across from us from Houstan, Texas. Steve and Carroll are the grandparents of nine grandchilderen and are enjoying a two week vacation in Italy. We easily chatted with them about their experiences and travels in Italy (we reciprocated) as well as about life in Houstan. Conversation flowed and I soon lost track of time. This was the quickest 1 hour 10 minute train ride I've been on.
After arriving at Termini train station in Rome we took a short ride on the colourfully decorated metro. Tow stops later...
...and we were at the Colosseum!
We dumped our luggage at our hotel and hit the pavement.
We did. Being there for only one night we decided to jump on an open top sightseeing tour bus. Unlike the other tour buses ours had a canopy which still gave us a great vantage point and a breeze but without letting the sun fry us like chickens!
Rome is so rich in its historical and archeological findings and standing buildings that we tried to soak in as much information about the place as we could!
And of course traffic was busy as usual.
There were loads of make shift stalls selling knock off Louis Vuitton, Prada and Guicci handbags and wallets.
The tour dropped us off where we started so we stopped at the Colosseum for a photo before grabbing a bite to eat for dinner. A trip back in time - what a day!
