But here I am; the wind in my hair, hot sun on my back and dust swirling behind us!
We had driven through Pygros and down to Kamari and were on our way in the opposite direction towards Oìa taking a detour through Firostefani and Imerglovi.
Shaun easily manoeuvred the quad up the winding road.
The island is unique with its west facing cliff side and flatter east side. We had a great view of the plains beneath us. It's a wonder that people keep vegetable gardens as the vegetation here is limited due to the volcanic soil. But here's another photo for you, dad - to inspire your own scarecrow creations!
The best thing about travelling with a scooter or quad is that you can always find a convenient parking spot! We had driven down a steep fairly narrow road to Amoudi Bay and were smiling to ourselves as Smart cars were awkwardly reversing having ventured too far down the hill in search of a close park. We, however, found a snug spot between to cars.
We had met a Danish man who worked in a jewellery store on Sunday who spoke to us inFlemish as we spoke back to him in Afrikaans. We had such a great conversation with him both Shaun and I was so amazed at how similar our two languages were. He took us through the shop to his balcony just so we could enjoy the view. He pointed to Oìa and told us that on the very corner there was a bay with a small island just off the coast line which we could swim to. So here we are on our way to swim through the small channel.
We spotted someone's lunch hanging out to dry in true Santorini style and eyed off everyone's meals as we walked through the restaurants towards our destination.
We ignored the massive rock fall warning sign and proceeded to walk over the fallen rocks and narrow path.
The water was an array colours from crystal clear, light turquoise to dark blue as the underwater cliff dropped off. I knew you wouldn't believe me so here's proof!
It was picture perfect, completed with a colourful Greek boat!
The water was cool but the perfect temperature in the sun. Shaun did some cliff diving and we swam together enjoying the view of all the Caldera facing towns from below.
The trip back on the quad was enjoyable. I tucked my camera away having taken photos on the road to Oìa, sat back with my hands on Shaun's waist and just enjoyed the view.
Oìa is beautiful too and not as busy as Fira. We took photos of the beautiful church, bells and rustic doors!
I read my book as a I lay in the sun while Shaun enjoyed a more sensible spot in the shade.
A nap, a shower and another chapter later we took to the pavement to admire fast approaching sunset.
It's as if everyone gathers after the day's activities as they line the walls to enjoy the sunset.
